It presents artists such as Banco de Gaia, Cydonia, Total Eclipse, Man with no Name, Doof and many other pioneers of Goatrance. For us old Goaheads it´s truly a trip down memory-lane (and such a beautiful one); for people who didn´t listen to this particular style of music in the 90´s this is an excellent opportunity to be introduced to this magical style of music. This mix is just pure excellence. Go download it NOW. Or so I will hunt you down and kick your ass ;)

Link: http://www.ektoplazm.com/mixes/dj-basilisk-circadian-rhythms

Basilisk has been Djing for over a decade, and apart from that, he also manages three record labels (the eponymous Ektoplazm as well as Drumlore and Omnitropic). Basilisk spins a variety of styles covering all points of the psychedelic trance spectrum. Every performance is entirely improvised and custom-crafted to fit with the theme of the event and the flow of the night. He is skilled in both vinyl and CD mixing, but now prefers using a laptop and MIDI controller to maximize the creative potential of his sets with harmonic mixing and the use effects. He believes in the classic technoshamanistic concept of “the set as a journey,” and thus prefers to mix up the many styles of psytrance rather than stick to one. Depending on the time slot and nature of the event Basilisk sometimes plays darkpsy, forest music, sometimes full-on, but can also focus a whole set on techtrance or progressive. Old school mid-nineties Goa trance and classic psytrance sets are also available on special request :)

matt-in-orbit 2012

SISMIC

Sismic is Paolo Nofi, an Italian electronic music producer, born in July 1974. He is just about to finish his first album due out on Crop Circle records and released worldwide. His style is best described as a form of fullon psytrance.. But don´t worry, this is no cheezy shit with vocals and guitars, it is very deep and psychedelic but at the same time pumping, melodic and energetic. Just the way I like it!

Already at the age of 8, with the help of his 8 bit home computer, Paolo and his friends started experimenting with loops and samples, and after 4 years he met the midi machines. At the age of 12 he started to create his first patterns of Techno/Electronic music style with Synthezisers (Yamaha DX21 + drum machine /sequencer Roland TR-505 ). In the early 90's he started to buy and mixing House / Techno / Progressive / trance vinyl from around the world and play with Technics SL 1200 in some parties around Rome. After many years of self-studies in electronic music, learning most of the popular software for professional productions, he founded with Dj Meko a goa-trance project called Gaiatech and he at the same time started his solo project called SISMIC. The style is oriented towards Full-on morning with some obscure presences and acid lines. Paolo has played at some international festivals in Europe, like Existence Festival (Spain), 070707 Antiworld Festival (south of London), Sonica Electronic Music Festival 2005, 2007, 2009 and his music has also crossed the ocean to Universo Parallelo festival (Brasil). He has released an excellent album for free on Sun Station Records and available through Ektoplazm, and so you can download HERE. This album was made as a tribute to older psychedelic trance, back when it began to evolve from the classic Goa trance of the 1990s into the high-tech industrial/mechanical sound supported by labels such as Flying Rhino, Twisted, and Blue Room. His influences are artists such as The Cure, Front 242, Aphex Twin, Orbital, Hallucinogen, Koxbox, Shpongle, Korn, Tool, Tequilajazzz, X-dream, Queens of the stone age, U.N.K.L.E. To keep the music authentic to the sound of older goa, no standard presets were used while recording this album, and all sounds and sequences were created by Alex with analog synths and samplers, resulting in "full-power old school psytrance with the sheen of modern production technology".

As soon as the first song - World of Tomorrow - starts to sneak out from the speakers you can quickly hear that Alex has succeeded with what he set out to do with this album: to recreate the non-melodic era of goatrance but still with very high levels of creativity and production. The references and inspiration from the master mr S. Posford himself is obvious in many of the songs (especially when it comes to the basslines, rhytms and quirky sounds that are so in focus in his Hallucinogen - creations). However, this is nothing negative. And the first song is a real nasty stomper! 2nd song - Quaternion - is a bit more minimal and rough, but still with a nice feel and some weird elements. The next one - Cybermind - really embodies the musical heritage from oldschool goa; it´s very psychedelic, is has pumping rhytms, is 10 minutes long and has an interesting break in the middle complete with some nice break beat (now that is something that you don´t hear everyday). This song is also super-intense, crazy and will eventually tweak your brain :P The album continues in the same style, it is high-quality oldschool but with a harder, rougher edge, more experimental and wild, and less fluffy and melodic. I like it! Nr. 6 - Ginger - is also a real treat for your ears and for your mind taking a nice trip to outer space... And so what are you waiting for, fools! Go listen to it now. And see you on the other side!

http://www.ektoplazm.com/free-music/kadasarva-steamagination
http://sunstation.ru/
http://soundcloud.com/kadasarva

matt-in-orbit 2012

Lost Theory festival

If you´re a lover of dark/forest and goatrance the Lost Theory festival is surely something you want to consider visiting this year. This festival is held between the 15th and 20th of august in Croatia, close to Deringaj, on the banks of the Otuča (Ooh-tooh-tsjààgh) river. With artists performing such as Furious, Ocelot, Farebi Jalebi, Yudhistira and oldschoolers Cosmosis, Darshan and Asia 2001, it promises to be a hell of party and well worth the 60euro the tickets currently sell for! And the line-up isn´t even complete yet, so expect more goodies to come. The festival will also have a Crossover-floor (with line-up TBA), and a chill-out area (with first name Biosphere presented), and except from this will have a cinema, lectures, restaurant area and a whiskey-bar (yummie!). If you don´t want to hang around the festival for 6 days in a row, the organisers offer other alternatives in areas close by; for an extra fee you can go visit waterfalls, caves, go mountain biking, bungyjumping(!), and play around with electricity in the Nicolai Tesla museum. It´s nice to have something more to look forward to and make it a proper vacation instead of hours and hours of drinking and dancing (which of course also is the shit!). The two persons behind it are Tore Mortensen (Erot) & Christian Borgmann (Dj Samsara), both from Denmark. They have been into the electronic music-scene for many years and are now tied to the Canadian label Altar Records. It started with them meeting at a party and quickly discovering their shared passion for music. And the rest, is as they say history. He first heard trance music when he was 15, and started his own creative adventures in his 20´s. Over the last seven years, Phobos Azazel has been focusing on psychedelic tunes with journeys growing deeper and wider with every new excursion. In 2008 he decided to seek more education within the field of music, so he attended SAE Institute in Slovenia and earned an official certification as an electronic music producer. Thus, he can now work as a sound producer/engineering not only in the trance world, but in almost every musical field. He has released several songs on compilations from for example Bhooteshwara records, and Kagdilia records before releasing this - his first album - on Croatian label Lost Theory Records. Here are my favourite tracks from this excellent release bordering between forest/twilight and a bit darker sounds:

1. Specular Reflection - Deep, quirky beginning, with loads of weird chewing sounds, after a while taking off with twisted melodies going in all directions

5. Magnetic Plazma - A bit more uptempo with organic sounds, alien voices and loads of twists and turns building into crazy intense patterns

7. Organistic - More chewing, more intense quirkiness, combined with spooky strings floating around in the background and with an ending turning your brain inside-out, upside down (complete with sirens)

8. Cosmic Pearls - Turning it up a notch, with nice rhythmic sound-patterns, some well-developed melodies connecting - and of course some crunchy twisted sounds, but refined and not all over the place

http://soundcloud.com/usp_mkd
http://www.losttheoryrecords.com/

matt-in-orbit 2012

Corona - Black To Back

Today I like to point you to a new song that was part of my latest purchase from Beatport. It is a really great minimal/melodic psy tune made by Corona and appears on the digital ep called Polarity out on German label Solar Tech. Corona is also due to release their album Sonar Luminescence on that same label (hopefully) very soon. Hear the preview of that album here.

Corona consists of Magnus Claussen and Mike Davies, both from South Africa. They started their musical journey in 1998 by forming a band. Soon after they discovered electronic music and Corona was formed in 2001. Their debut-album called Photosphere was released in 2005 on Sanskara records and was released well, and then came a lot of gigs in Europe as well as many of South Africa's top festivals including Earthdance,Vortex and Origin Festival. After a short break from the scene the pair re-united and Corona was reformed. Signed to Solar-Tech records in Germany, they describe their sound as fullon/progressive while maintaining psychedelic roots. They have appeared on numerous compilation and released 2 digital EPs.

http://soundcloud.com/coronamusic
http://www.solartechrecords.com/

matt-in-orbit 2012

Field Rotation

Field Rotation is an artist from Germany creating beautiful chill-out by combining acoustic and electronic sounds. His musical journeys tend to result in a symbiosis between classical music and more traditional chill-out, often very emotional and touching. He has released on labels such as Fluid Audio (UK), Ultimae Records (FR) and Denovali Records (DE), appearing on compilations Fahrenheit Project Part VII, Imaginary Friends, as well as releasing EPs Regenzeit, Why Things Are Different and the full-length album Acoustic Tales available both on CD and 2xLP. This is perfect music for a Sunday afternoon, or a late evening with red whine and nice conversation :)

http://fieldrotation.de/
http://soundcloud.com/fieldrotation

matt-in-orbit 2012

Oikeusjyvä

Oikeusjyvä is the alias of Jukka Surakka from Vantaa, Finland, having been written electronic music since the late nineties. His sound is inspired by different genres from trance to ambient, and sometimes even dubby down tempo, jungle, etc. He likes to create "bad ass melodies with nice harmonic touch, aggressive bass lines and powerful drums that will make your legs move like boiled spaghetti on the dance floor".

So far he has played around Brasil, Finland, Israel, Japan, Russia and Ukraine. Oikeusjyvä has released tracks on Hippie Killer Productions, Adama Records, Random Records and Space Baby Records. He has also released Mp3 format EP albums for download on famous Finnish psytrance label Antiscarp Records and extreme underground freeformtrance netlabel Riitta Records. His debut album 'Oikeusjyvä - Huomentally Unsane' was released on January 2011 at Hippie Killer Productions.

On his soundcloud you can get complete access to a number of his songs as well as hear snippets of others. My favouries are Ny On Sun Aikas - crazy freeform reminding me of the early sound from Austrian label Psy-Harmonics, In The End - great chill with nice rhytms and Was A Bee - really nice melodic, twisted psy-trance. What really stands out in OJ:s music is solid production and his ability to be creative in everything he does, presenting own fresh ideas. I hope we get to hear more from this guy.

http://soundcloud.com/ojsound
http://www.hippiekillerproductions.net/

matt-in-orbit 2012

Celt Islam - Baghdad

I am not usually fond of music that tries to mix ethnic elements with dub/reggae influences. It usually doesn´t give me anything, turning out to be just some crazy pot-pourri of tones and rhythms without being really rooted in something creative and soulful. This album is for me something entirely different and Celt Islam has been successful with his blending of dub/electro with "Islamic/world grooves".

Celt Islam is Muhammad Abdullah Hamzah an English Muslim, Sufi from Manchester, England, and a member of the northern British alternative dub/breaks outfit "Nine Invisibles " and " Analogue Fakir ". He has released two albums called Dervish and AL Mizan, which mixes dub step, dancehall with dubby world music. He has also worked along side respected names such as Inder Goldfinger (tabla player for Stone Roses), Ian Brown´s band and Natacha Atlas and Dawoud Kringle who has performed with for example Lauryn Hill. Celt Islam tries to define a "Sufi-Dub genre", a sub-genre he is one of the few trying to create. So what is this new album all about? Well the listener can expect twelve really good songs, all trying to embody Celt Islam´s "dub-driven crossover". The best ones are:

2. Tribernetikz - Intense dubby rhythms, electronic sequencers and beautiful string-parts combined with some sort of acoustic string instrument playing a nice melody building up to a climax

5. Sarayada Dub - Nice wobbly sequencer base, tablas, a good sub, sampled vocals, mixed with reggae elements, and different parts of acoustic melodies with the smell of the middle-east

6. Borderless World (feat. the Renegade Sufi) - another good blend between reggae and world music with some deeper dub and electronic parts mixed with delayed voices and a very nice melody on top

8. Habbiyya - a bit slower and deeper, with a nice electronic sequencer part and flowing strings. This song has a bit of a more tentative, melancholic feel, with a nice minimal groove and beautiful melodies

9. Baghdad - the title track is a bit more uptempo, with powerful and deeply intense string-parts and in the middle presenting more rhythms, some floating vocals with a breeze of lost memories

http://soundcloud.com/celt-islam
https://www.facebook.com/

matt-in-orbit 2012

Transition Festival

Transition festival is held between the 5th and 9th of Apri, 2012 in a national park, in Almonde, Spain (close to Seville). It is one of the first big European festivals this summer, and a perfect getaway, especially for us living up north, by then craving some sunny warm weather, after the long grim winter.

This festival is organized partly by the people behind German label BMSS records. Therefore it is not surprising to see many of their talented artists perform at the festival for example Hypnocoustics, Multiman and label DJs Boom Shankar and Yan Gecko. So one can expect a lot of melodic psy on this festival. Other artists sure to satisfy your ears, mind, soul and feet on the mainfloor are oldschool-goa act Total Eclipse; Lucas from Tip Records, Aphid Moon and Tantrix from excellent label Blue Hour Sounds. Also playing are Elegy, Phasephour and DJ Daksinamurti, the rest of the lineup is filled with for me not so known live-acts and DJs which I´m sure are still going to be interesting to hear. The line-up for the chill-floor is not yet completed, guessing by the size of it ( and the chill-out opening already on Wednesday evening for early people arriving early). But Aes Dana and Entheogenic are of course two great artists that will draw a crowd.

So, the festival gates open @ 10pm on Wed the 4th and the opening ceremony will take place on the main-floor @ exactly 10.22 pm on Thurs evening the 5th of April. Tickets at the moment go as low as 40 Euro, however they will only be 50 Euro at the gates, so not much more expensive and well worth the price for what seems to be a really amazing festival. Here is a video from last year:

Except for music to dance and chill to, there will be other activities to participate in such as lectures, massage, meditation and a lot more to satisfy the mind, body and the soul. Transition festival also has a children area, a market area and there will be multiple performances of various kinds. Finally DJ Boom Shankar has put together a little playlist on his soundcloud presenting some of the artists in this years edition of Transition festival. So if you want a taste of the music before deciding if to go or not just have a listen. See you in Spain!

www.transitioncrew.org/
Facebook-event

matt-in-orbit-2012

Logic Bomb - The Grid

Time to be a bit patriotic ;) Logic Bomb consists of two Swedish guys - Jonas Pettersson och Johan Krafft, both from the town of Örebro ( home of many really good psytrance-musicians). And when it comes to making high quality full-on with a psychedelic twist, Logic Bomb really knows how to pull their act together! Their new album, The Grid, which was released about a month ago is not an exception.

Logic Bomb, was formed in 1998, and two years later, they released their highly thought debut album 'Headware', produced together with fellow Swede, Jonas Bergvall, on legendary Swedish label Spiral Trax. Following up on the phenomenal success of 'Headware', their second album 'Unlimited' was released on leading English label TIP World in 2002. After years of silence, in 2007 the Logic Bombs finally released their 3rd and highly acclaimed album, Sonic Algebra released on the label Solstice Music. Mixing really powerful melodies with soul, and high-tech, weird psy-sounds, Logic Bomb is one of the few groups today, that has created their own high-quality sound and has managed to stick to it, thus you can often hear if it´s one of their songs playing. This is also obvious when listening to their new album released on TIP records.

Although this album is a good album all-through, with all the songs being really well-produced and also capable of telling their own little personal stories to the listener, as always there are a few songs that you for some reason speaks to you more and that you end up playing on repeat.

3. Bitter Hitter - initially focusing on metallic sounds jumping around and then presenting more melodic elements with really powerful patterns of tones, but still sticking to a psy-groove

4. Sinister Science - some really great full-on with beautifully flowing melodies, in nice symbiosis with quirky psychedelic patterns and sounds; and with an ending spreading warm energies and a smell of green grass and naked feet dancing away

7. 4th Dimension - built upon a steady structure of a pumping psychedelic groove with a hint of funkiness, continuing with a really emotional melody, and finishing off with putting it all together and twisting it to its fullest. Good shit!

8. Knorrar - with an element of the oldschool-goa sound and also reminding me a bit of older Logic Bomb songs in structure, melodies and quirky sounds this song is just as the title says (in Swedish) knorrig :)

http://logicbomb.se/
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Logic+Bomb

matt-in-orbit 2012

Apnea

Apnea is a DJ/artist from Belgium. He started playing in 2003 @ a Belgian underground club called the Zoo and was quickly signed to record label Kairoo. He is currently also signed to the label Naturall Productions. Having played at many parties and festivals around the globe, for example in Germany,Austria, Nepal, Indonesia and Thailand he ended up in Ban Sabaii, Thailand.´, where he also organizes the Acid Moon parties at Ban Sabaii which are held two days before every Half moon. And together with Jharu he started The Unseen Vision,a project more focused on night time music. Apnea describes his DJ-sets as "groovy, psychedelic, full on sets filled with mind teasing twists and a pinch of hypnotism to bring out the trance state of the mind". The following set is a good example of this. With a lot of artists from the Latin American psy-scene, such as Ital (Chile), In Lak Ech (Mexico) and Disorder (Mexico), this mix is sure to get you dancing around when doing the dishes ;)

The Secret of the Naga's Fire by Apnea

http://soundcloud.com/apnea

matt-in-orbit 2012

Southwild

One of the latest compilations I bought was Peakological released by the Swizz label Peak records. While this is solid release, with many songs that are good, one of them stood out from the rest and that was Dr. Feelgood with the artist Southwild. I can´t really put my finger on what it is that makes this song so special, it might be that despite its pretty hard, intense style it has a flavour of funkiness. Or it can simply be that the artist uses sounds and rhythms that really speaks to me. Whatever it is, this song has that something that makes the listener return to it again and again.

Soutwhild is Jay Alien, from Germany but now living in Toronto/Canada where he also works as a mastering engineer. Among the gems you can find is new compilation Ambrosia and an older one called Imaginary friends, as well as two personal favourites: Distances by H.U.V.A Network released in 2004 and the first album from Aes Dana - Season 5 released as early as January 2003. I might order these pretties myself. Among the collection packs you shouldn´t miss out on is the carbon pack by Carbon Based Lifeforms which includes their first 3 albums, and if you get a fat pay-check you should definitely invest in the Fahrenheit Project Collection, which includes all 7 installations of the series for 70 Euro. The good thing with these packs is that you pay much less for shipping than for buying each CD separately. The sale ends on January the 31st so be quick about it. The song below is taken from the first Carbon Based album called Hydroponic Garden. A true masterpiece.

Ultimae was founded early 2000 by Vincent Villuis aka Aes Dana and Sandrine Gryson aka Sunny / Mahiane and is based in Lyon, France. Mr Peculiar is soon to be releasing a new album. And it´s not a day to soon. Last album - Infinite Evolution (released on Sonic Dragon) - was released almost five years ago, and is in my opinion one of the best melodic psy-albums being made in the 21st century. With tracks like Mystic Entity, Hero and Re-Entry this album should be in everyone´s shelf.

Mr Peculiar is Dustin Bint living in Melbourne, Australia. He has been making music for over 15 years and has released 4 albums and numerous songs on different compilations. His musical talent has brought him gigs all over the world, in Australia, Japan and many places in Europe. His debut album Elements was released on Tribeadelic records in 2002 but it was with his 3rd album that I, and I think many others as well, found out about him. It is called Mind-Dala and was released on Sonic Dragon in 2005.

So what can we except from this new album with the title Alternate Worlds (and being released by french label Hadra)? Well, since the release of his last album not much have been heard from Dustin, just a few songs here and there, but not very much considering the time-span. In July, 2011 came his latest track, How´s Your Head, actually being released on a Hadra compilation called Pangea, a very nice compilation. The song itself is a bit slower than we are used to hear from Mr Peculiar, but still shows his ability to make beautiful melodies and create powerful atmospheres. One can only hope that his upcoming album will include more music like this. You will also get inspired as well as invited to participate in other peoples´stories and experiences. His mix mainly contains artists from the Wildthings label such as Archaic, Realitygrid and E.V.P. This British label just happen to be one of my favourites, the label-boss dj Beardy presenting a classic set @ Antaris Festival 2011. Panda also adds a song from Ianurias new album (Beware of the Fish) and finishes of with Logic Bomb (a very old track from a Stone Age Records compilation)! Be sure to check it out

Panda - Younion (Dj Set) by pandaudio

http://www.psyks.com/

Now the second mix is recorded by djsoma who lives in Finland. His mix Before 2012 One is recently released and gives the listener a very chilly after-taste, bordering to floating ambient. Presenting artists such as Robert Rich (considered one of the most influential ambient musicians and releasing music for over 30 years), and Krister Linder (the Swedish producer/singer/songwriter with his angelic voice), this mix takes another direction when comparing to many of the more traditional psychill-mixes you hear. This mix is available only through mediafire and not for direct listen, but I urge you not to miss out on this very special 70 minutes excursion into all kinds of chilly soundscapes.

1. Robert Rich - Pathways

2. Marsen Jules - Coeur Saignant

3. Bruno Sanfilippo & Mathias Grassow - Cromo [ Piano & Drones ] 05

4. Krister Linder - Shrine of Time (Solar Fields Remix)

5. Kalya Scintilla - Awareness

6. Bluetech - Avatar of the Horticult

7. Ishq - Blue Drop

8. Kuniyuki Takahaski - Ocean Waves (Minilogue's Dream Drone Mix)

9. Every song has a different tempo and a different rhytm, the artist Klaus Balzarek apparently blending a lot of different influences. To describe it as a downtempo album would be wrong, especially since many of the songs are made with a pretty fast beat. However, when listening to this album I still get the feeling that the artist wants his audience to listen and relax rather than to kick it on the dancefloor. My favourites are:

2. Hushushush - a gentle breath of air which allows the listener to slowly float inwards, despite the fast beat

6. Aquarius - with a driven baseline and rhythmic didgeridoo takes the listener on a more of a tribal journey

7. Grau N - reminding me somewhat of older songs made by B.Ashra & Ricky Deadking - especially their Live At U-Site Fusion album. A fast beat and some nice blend of electronic and acoustic

8. Out Is In - the final track with some initial chanting, takes a turn into a more mellow chill-song but with a very nice scale of tones, given a nice overall feel

matt-in-orbit 2012
